Step 1: Site Preparation

Proper site preparation is the foundation of a successful pond liner installation. Follow these steps:

  • Clear the area: Remove all rocks, roots, sharp objects and debris from the pond bed and slopes. Any protruding material can puncture the geomembrane.
  • Grade the surface: Smooth and compact the subgrade to achieve a uniform surface. Recommended slope ratio is 2:1 to 3:1 for side walls.
  • Add a protective layer: Place a nonwoven geotextile cushion layer (minimum 300g/m²) over the compacted soil to protect the geomembrane from puncture.
  • Install drainage: Ensure proper drainage around the pond perimeter to prevent water accumulation under the liner.

Step 2: Geomembrane Unrolling and Positioning

When the subgrade is ready, unroll the HDPE geomembrane carefully:

  • Deploy the geomembrane rolls along the pond length, allowing 10-15cm overlap at each seam.
  • Avoid dragging the membrane across rough surfaces. Use equipment or manual labor to lift and position each panel.
  • In hot weather, allow the material to relax for 30 minutes before welding to reduce thermal expansion stress.
  • For ponds larger than 500m², use our 6m-wide rolls to minimize the number of seams.

Step 3: Wedge Welding and Extrusion Welding

Seam quality determines the long-term performance of your pond liner. Two main welding methods are used:

  • Wedge welding (hot air): Best for long straight seams. The welding machine heats both membrane edges to approximately 200-220°C and bonds them together. Recommended overlap width: 100-150mm.
  • Extrusion welding: Used for T-joints, patches, pipe penetrations and difficult access areas. A filler rod of compatible HDPE material is melted onto the seam area.

Always perform a test weld on a sample piece before starting production welding. Test strips should be sent for peel and shear testing per ASTM D6392 standards.

Step 4: Leak Testing and Quality Inspection

After welding is complete, conduct thorough leak detection:

  • Non-destructive testing: Use air channel testing (dual-track wedge welds) or vacuum box testing on extrusion welds.
  • Visual inspection: Walk the entire liner surface checking for holes, cuts, wrinkles or unsealed overlaps.
  • Water filling test: Fill the pond gradually and monitor water level for 48-72 hours. Any significant drop indicates a leak.

Step 5: Protection and Backfilling

After successful testing, protect the installed liner:

  • Cover the bottom with 15-20cm of clean sand or soil to protect the geomembrane from UV and mechanical damage.
  • Install erosion protection on slopes using geobags or concrete blocks where water flow is concentrated.
  • Secure the top edge with an anchor trench (minimum 600mm deep) to prevent wind uplift.
